I’m an overachiever

I am an overachiever…Just ask my daughter, who used it as one of her three reasons for why she looks up to her mother in a 4th grade writing assignment. I’ll admit, when I saw “overachiever” in writing by my 9-year-old, my heart immediately sank. Is overachiever a good thing? Is it something I want her to strive for? Is it something I feel proud modeling?

But as I read on, I more clearly understood what she meant and immediately began to smile. “My mom always goes above and beyond. No one told her to write a book, but she did it. After writing and publishing a book, she’s now working on another. My mom does not just write books, she also made her own little side business that is not so little. As you can see my mom is always doing something extra .”

She didn’t mean overachiever in the way adults think about it with the implied negative context from society. She meant overachiever based on the actual definition of the word “A person who performs better or achieves more than people are generally expected to, often because of high ambition“. Now that is a definition I am proud to model for her!

Are you an overachiever like me? I’d love to hear your thoughts?
